Daemon 7

  1. DAEMON 7 - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It is part of the "Daemon" series I started for "Fantastic Stories".

My text for the story appeared in white ink along the bottom of the illustration, which extended down to accommodate all the text:

"My eyes rest upon our ship's watcher. He knows all the tricks of the demon's way, all their games, all their wiles. Slanted, blank eyes with lights behind them, he is blind, yet he sees everything with his mind. Like a gargoyle he squats, as old as time itself. His face a wrinkled leather mask, while inside his skull he works his wizardry. He is guardian of the ship. Nothing escapes his sightless eyes. He stands on guard by day and by night keeping all evil things away."…

In the 1940's psychologist J.B. Rhine, of Duke University conducted parapsychology tests on a number of human subjects to see if they had psychic abilities ( a sixth sense) such as telepathy and clairvoyance. There were similar tests performed in England around that same time. All the testing resulted in a disappointing conclusion; no such sixth sense was evident.

And yet, occasionally, I see a news report of a police detective bureau giving credit to an "ESPER" who helped solve a crime!

So, here is my ESPER, the Guardian of the ship. I had hoped to make him more important to the story beside just protecting the ship.
